The Emergence of AI and Neural Networks

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been the buzzword in the technology world for quite some time now. AI is incredibly fascinating; it allows computers to improve their perception, cognition with growing experience. Machines learn (using deep learning algorithms) on data, giving you the desired results.

From all your personal assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri or Cortana to proper self-driving cars and robots, they all have deep learning play a major role in these of deep neural nets learning in them. Artificial Intelligence/Deep learning is the study of different algorithms, in which computers can learn from data using these algorithms and perform tasks on its own.

Neural networks also referred to as ‘artificial’ neural networks comprise of various deep learning techniques. Deep learning techniques are a combination of make use of artificial neurons layers that mimic the way neurons work in the human brain.

Dr. Robert Hecht-Nielsen the inventor of one of the first neurocomputers, defines a neural network as: "...a computing system made up of a number of simple, highly interconnected processing elements, which process information by their dynamic state response to external inputs”.

Neural Networks can be used for several applications. It figures out regularities within a set of patterns through associations with volumes of variable and diversified data. It starts with dumping an enormous amount of data which eventually enables it to figure things out on its own.

So after several iterations, the computer will start identifying and learn to differentiate a horse from a pig with its own cognitive algorithm. It becomes a continuous process, and after a point, the computer can learn and understand objects and situations on its own. The computer starts getting smarter using AI algorithms.

Just like a child's mind that gets shaped with every new situation and circumstance, computers understand and comprehend the situation and gets updated and upgraded with every new (data points/ use cases being added to the data).

AI has taken up a paintbrush using deep learning algorithms and turning your phones a place for artwork. Prisma was a 2016 revolution that took the internet by storm because it started using art filter to change your pictures with its algorithmic magic.

In the context of Prisma, neural networks allow the app to extract patterns of colors and shapes from a particular work of art and apply these models to a photograph. It also helps to speed this entire extracting and conversion process. Prisma implemented neural networks because the filters that look like masterpieces of famous artists are essentially made from scratch. Neural networks enable computers to perform complex operations.

One brilliant way how AI has been used in a viral application that is Prisma. Prisma uses one special and unique algorithm, unlike other photo apps that use random filters. Prisma takes art styles for very famous artists like Vincent Van Gogh or Pablo Picasso and makes a stunning and striking combination images.

Prisma was launched in 2016 and immediately gained immense popularity as it was giving something different from what was already there in the market. It uses a Convolutional Neural Network that takes what the original picture as a proper guidance and reference and transforms it. The app learns the nature of the original image and applies an artistic layer to make it stand out. The App processes the images on the cloud server.

Prisma transforms your photograph entirely digitally and uses artworks of famous artists. Other picture or photo apps use a layer and add a filter. Prisma enables Artificial Intelligence to make the machines process information and give unique outputs as human do. It makes an image different from scratch like a painter would do.

We are always craving for fresh content, and Prisma is doing just that. Prisma is unusual as compared to what we see in regular photo editors. Usually, other such apps just give a superficial effect on the pictures. Prisma intensively uses neural networks to recreate the objects in the given image on a fresh canvas. The resulting image that is the outcome of this venture is a new masterpiece. Prisma can intelligently identify objects and completely transform those using brilliant works of art. This is a big leap for AI that we have absorbed in our technology.

Google in the Play Store has started using the power of AI to identify intrusive Android Apps and improving the privacy and security of their apps. Intrusive apps are those that make users give more information that is required, like more personal information. So a similar set of applications with requires a similar set of authorizations and no extra personal information. Like many apps may not need to access the geolocation data but they do ask which is a security breach. Here Google is using AI to understand and keep a check on all such apps. This algorithm is automatically analyzing and identifying these apps without any human interference.

Artificial Intelligence is not just about science fiction anymore; it has evolved way more than that. It is being used in robotics, data mining, finance, E-commerce and many other fields. AI (uses machine learning and Deep learning) is way more present in our lives than we realize.

Like Play Store is using AI to identify intrusive apps, we can also see the presence of AI in Google’s voice searches. Slowly typing for queries or communicating with the search engines via text will become obsolete. For all our search queries we will just speak to the search engines and everything will become completely automated. Gradually Artificial Intelligence will completely automate the entire system and transform the way we see the world.
